When illustrating something for children you have to be careful what you include. Making sure that it is easy for them to understand and follow the story but also make sure that what you are including is appropriate for children. Typically a lot of stories are relatively simple as they are intended for children, they normally end up focusing on morals as a way of teaching the child something. However these can be found to stick to very marginalised groups.
This is why it is important to be inclusive in your work, meaning including different genders, race/ethnicities and religion. When researching this topic i came across this website ‘https://www.globalpartnership.org/blog/how-make-childrens-book-collections-more-inclusive’ at the beginning of the article it highlights this quote - “The more you leave out, the more you highlight what you leave in.” Henry Green, author. Though i believes this focuses more on the narrative of a story it can also be taken into consideration when illustrating a book. Though a lot of the time they are going to be focusing on the story what you include and what you don’t include in the illustrations really depict how the story is going to not only read but also perceived.
